WASHINGTON HOME & DESIGN

Washington Home & Design

With so many furniture options, specialty stores and stylish shopping neighborhoods at their disposal, homeowners can style every room in the house with just the right pieces. And the nursery and playroom are no exception. From cutting edge modern to elegant traditional, children's furniture comes in many varieties, and is often designed to grow with your little ones. Here is a selection of the newest—or just the cutest—items we could find, plus a cheat sheet for a few of the specialty shops throughout Maryland, Washington, DC, and Virginia that carry them.

Three panel designs in six colors and three slat options in three finishes make it possible to customize the aerial crib from nurseryworks. The handcrafted piece also converts to a toddler bed to grow with your child.

Young America, a collection of children's furniture from Stanley Furniture Company, introduces a kaleidoscope of colors with the myHaven line. With 20 wood and painted finishes available on each of the 30 pieces in the collection, anything is possible, such as this twin and double bunk bed in Sea Grass Green.

Magical Memories: Create children's rooms that they'll always remember.

Sometimes a feeling or a notion sets the tone for the design when you enter a child’s room. Maybe it's the architecture of the home or the room itself that stirs an emotion. Such was the case for Debbie Hobar, owner/principal designer of Precious Places Ltd., when she walked into an empty room with big windows and a fireplace that she was asked to turn into a child’s room for the Loudoun Arts Council Designer Showhouse.

Featured: Wren & Divine's Custom Round Crib with Black Satin Finish by All Things Creative, Crib and Mattress, $1,396, Bedding $799. WREN & DIVINE, 703-356-WREN (9736), www.wrenanddivine.com.

CAPITOL FILE

Capitol File Toile Dresser

WREN & DIVINE’s elegant hand-painted French Toile armoire and three-drawer French chest will add an element of sophistication to any little one’s room. The chest boasts an optional changing table – a must, in our opinion.  These pieces are age-appropriate (for the nursery set) but still beautiful enough to charm parents with discerning taste.  The armoire is $3,640, the chest $1,987 (add $305 for the changer). Available at WREN & DIVINE, 6645 Old Dominion Drive, McLean, Virginia, 703-356-9736.

WASHINGTON LIFE

WREN & DIVINE has lots of new pieces in their McLean store. One of the most unique is the Big Top Circus Toy Box, featuring customizable hand-painted details (it can be made to match any room or décor), and has space between the chest and lid to prevent your child's fingers from being caught. The box can be used as a bench when closed.
